“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”. This saying is especially relevant when it comes to oral health. A large part of our practice is devoted to prevention of future gum disease and tooth decay: fluoride treatments, sealants, education, cleanings. Treating small problems ( e.g. gingivitis, minor cavities, etc.) is easier, less painful and, in general, less expensive than waiting until those little problems become big problems (periodontitis, dental abscesses, etc.).
We recommend having your teeth cleaned by the dental hygienist and examined by the dentist at least every six months. Often times x-rays will be taken of the teeth which can show dental decay (“cavities”), bone loss due to gum disease, and other pathologies. The dental hygienist will clean and polish the teeth which removes plaque, bacteria and tartar (calculus) which has accumulated on your teeth and gums. This process reduces gum disease and inflammation.
The other activity that is going on at a patient’s cleaning appointment is education. The hygienist and/or dentist can suggest new or different techniques of cleaning your teeth and gums based on patterns noted during the cleaning appointment. Also, the hygienist can suggest avoiding certain foods/drinks if she sees patterns developing ( e.g. avoiding excess soda pop consumption if demineralization of enamel is noted). We at North Creek Dental Care want to help you keep your teeth and gums in the best possible shape. Think of the cleaning/check-up appointment as a “coaching” experience where the dental team can non-critically suggest ways to make you oral health better and sustainable.
